Taco loves hot dog

I've always felt that there are only two ways to have dinner each night. Either it's going to be taco night or it's going to be hot dog night. Those are the most American of meals that complete my balanced diet. Jon Belushi had little chocolate donuts, I have hot dogs and tacos. Not only do they combat the hunger in your stummy, but they also make a cute couple. You can tell when you put a hot dog next to a taco that sparks will surely fly. In honor of National Taco Day, I plan to let their love reign. You too, can support their teenage passion. Let us unite and disregard all the naysayers of this relationship.

Taco the Cake?

These are the ultimate vegetarian taco.
286-popstars-kristen_lg
Kristen in Washington made these adorable Taco Pops (above) that were featured on the baking blog Bakerella where she also included some directions on how to make them and (below) Tina over at Tina's Sugar Shack made these awesome mini-cakes complete with shredded lettuce and grated cheddar cheese (aka dyed green and orange coconut).  Amazing!

Taco Cakes
Tacos are great on their own but taco shaped cake takes things to the next level.  We're at about a 7 now.  Things are getting crazy.  These have to make their way into Taco the Art Show!!  Any takers?

The Almighty Choco Taco

What taco loving website would be complete without mentioning this heavy hitter,

the ChocoTaco.
(pause for chorus of angels)

I mean, it's a taco, it's dessert, it's dipped in chocolate, it's got a weird soft/crunchy cone/shell...the ChocoTaco really has it all.  Apparently even Jesus likes them and he's a notoriously picky eater.

                                          internet jesus found here.

And, if for some reason you can't find an ice cream man and your favorite bodega is sold out of these little semi-circles of heaven, never fear, there's actually a recipe for homemade ChocoTacos online!  (Because of course there is.)

Bon Appetit!

Taco-in-a-Bag: Heaven-in-your-Hand

Picture (C) Chicalookate

I love this recipe (especially the part about making a taco in a bag) and it couldn't be easier:

Taco in a Bag

Ingredients
Makes: 4
  • 455 g lean ground beef or the meat substitute of your choosing
  • 1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
  • 4 (2.5 ounce) packages corn chips
  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 chopped fresh tomato
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/3 cup salsa
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Preparation method

Prep: 5 mins | Cook: 10 mins
1.
Place ground beef in a large skillet. Cook and stir over medium heat until browned. Drain excess oil. Mix in the taco seasoning and prepare according to the directions on the package.
2.
With the bags unopened, gently crush the corn chips. Snip the corners off the bags using scissors and slit open the bags along the side edge. Spoon equal amounts of the beef (or seitan) mixture, lettuce, tomato, Cheddar cheese, salsa and sour cream into the bags on top of the crushed chips. Serve in the bag and eat using a fork.

And you're done!  So simple!

Here's a great video with step-by-step instructions too:
Send us pictures of your attempts at making your own Walking Tacos!

Enjoy!!

Daddy, where do tacos come from?

Well Son, I'm glad you asked...

According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, "taco" is basically just the Spanish word for "sandwich" but it is so much more than that!

"A taco (play /ˈtɑːk/) is a traditional Mexican dish composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling. A taco can be made with a variety of fillings, including beef, chicken, seafood, vegetables and cheese, allowing for great versatility and variety. A taco is generally eaten without utensils and is often accompanied by garnishes such as salsa, avocado or guacamole, cilantro, tomatoes, onions and lettuce."

The taco predates the arrival of Europeans in Mexico. There is anthropological evidence that the indigenous people living in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico traditionally ate tacos filled with small fish. Writing at the time of the Spanish conquistadors, Bernal Díaz del Castillo documented the first taco feast enjoyed by Europeans, a meal which Hernán Cortés arranged for his captains in Coyoacán.[3][4] It is not clear why the Spanish used their word, "taco", to describe this indigenous food.

"oooooooh, I see.  Thanks Dad!"

"No problem, Son."
